UFC 109 Relentless

UFC 109 - Couture VS ColemanSaturday, Feb. 6th at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas will be the host of UFC 109 – Relentless. Headlining the card will be two legends of the game, and with a combined age of 91 years, we’re just hoping that nobody has a heart attack. Those guys are both UFC Hall of Famers, Randy Couture and Mark Coleman. While Coleman was the very first UFC heavyweight champion, it’s Couture who has had the better career.

This isn’t the first time Couture and Coleman have met in the ring, but it’s the first time since the 1989 US Olympic Festival while both were vying for spots on the US Olympic wrestling team. Coleman won that bout, and Couture admits that Coleman’s ground game is one to be reckoned with.

On Saturday, these two UFC legends will finally meet in their first MMA match, with Couture considered a huge favorite. While Coleman has lost 4 of his last 5 fights, Couture has won 3 of his last five. While he did lose two of those fights, those losses were against Minotauro Nogueira and Brock Lesnar, both being tough s.o.b.’s.

If Coleman has any chance to win this fight, it’s going to be on the ground. If Coleman can’t force his will upon Couture to fight on the ground, expect Couture to win with his fists. Regardless of what happens, this is a great fight for UFC fans…a fight that should’ve happened long ago.

As two of the men who helped lay the foundation for the UFC, I hope that the young UFC fans around the world give these aging warriors their due respect. Coleman was destroying men in the ring back in old ‘cockfighting’ days. Soon after that, Couture became the biggest MMA name in the world. If it weren’t for these guys, who knows where the UFC would be today?

Other UFC 109 Fights

The co-main event card will feature middleweights Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen. While Chael is no slouch, I’m expecting a win by knockout be Marquardt.

Other fights on the card include Mike Swick vs Paul Thiago, Demian Maia vs Dan Miller, Matt Serra vs Frank Trigg, and Justin Buchholz vs Mac Danzig.
